I have just discovered
Zhongwen.com! It's great - it explains etymology, some history, pronunciation, how to write Chinese characters, and it's a treasurehouse of links to more information.
It's funny, really. I seem to be becoming more Chinese because of the
non-Chinese people in my life. My American boyfriend learns Mandarin, and I dig out my old Chinese dictionaries. An American cartoonist asks about the difference in the two character sets, and I
Google-search for a Chinese-English dictionary and come across Zhongwen.com and spend an hour reading through it.
I'm not a very good Chinese girl - I don't even read Chinese properly! - but I am quite protective of being Chinese. :)
