D and I had a game of Scrabble over the past 2 nights. It's a thing we do once in a while, playing games like Scrabble or Boggle. It's great fun.
Funny, but a lot of the people I know love games: card games like bridge, chua tai tee (how
do you spell it?); commercial games like Scrabble, Boggle, Pictionary, Taboo; no-equipment-needed games like charades. And I don't mean 'love' like, "Oh that's fun, yeah I remember playing it when I was a teenager" kind of 'love'. These are people who will get together
just to play games. Well, that, and for the company, but you know. Is this a Singaporean thing? Because all the parties my ang moh friends throw seem to be more about standing around talking to people you don't seem to like very much and drinking, than about friends getting together to have some fun.
Maybe my eye's just jaundiced. Maybe it's all really the same, it's only that I don't know the 'right' people. Now that I think about it, I know some Singaporeans who throw that 'stand around, drink and make small talk' kind of parties, the kind where you clutch your food and drink desperately as shields against the terror of those strange prickly people. Maybe it's just that I'm shy, and that's why I hate that kind of party. It always feels superficial and boring to me. And did I mention terrifying? At least at the kind of parties we have, you can have fun.
